Bonjour à tous, and Wanju

Well it has been a sad start to the week with the passing of Queen Elizabeth II late last week. Together we mourn the passing of an exceptional woman whose life has been dedicated to the service of the public. We have marked her passing by flying the flags at half-mast. She is quoted as saying “Grief is the price that you pay for love”. They are beautiful words and ones I will always remember.

Recently at a Principal network meeting our attendance practices have been singled out. We are one of the secondary schools closest to our pre-COVID attendance levels.  Attendance structures and processes play a big part; recording, monitoring and following up each and every absentee. However, the biggest impact on student attendance comes from what happens in every classroom. Engaging and relevant lessons; strong relationships with a sense of belonging and a culturally responsive school that welcomes all students are the key ingredients to students attending school.

As learning online becomes more and more accessible we must ask what is the primary role of a school. If we can’t focus on relevance and a sense of community, it will be very difficult to provide a reason for students to attend. Congratulations and please keep up the good work in these areas.

Have a great week

En Avant

Lemov’s – No Opt Out

In earlier Heard on the Hill’s, I have shared snippets on the No Opt Out strategy as a means to increase student accountability within the classroom. There will be many hurdles to get this strategy running smoothly, and you could join the Coffee Club to have a peer observe you trying to establish this strategy. I have included this strategy again as I observed Lewis, during our SDD, give an excellent presentation titled Checking for Understanding. As part of his repertoire, he utilised Lemov’s strategy of No Opt Out. Lewis uses this strategy in all of his classes, which means a variety of academic applications.

One approach to get this going, if you do not wish to start cold, is a “rollout speech” telling your students in advance that you’re going to use this technique and explain why and how they should respond. By rolling out the technique, you may head off any potential hiccups.

  • What will happen when you use No Opt Out?
  • How students should respond
  • What will be tricky about it?
  • What it will be like over time as they get used to it?
  • Why you are doing this?

Coffee Club

Coffee Club is on tomorrow in Rm30 starting at 8.00am. If you have not been before please turn up to explore peer observations in a safe, supportive environment. Contact Cathy for further information.

Some teachers may still think they are being judged and spend time stressing over the perfect lesson for it to be observed, so it is perfect. That is why the Coffee Club is here; non-judgemental, peer-driven and highly supportive. The observations are about improvement, never perfection. Peer or classroom observations are never about the whole lesson and never about perfection.

After the wonderful presentations on SDD there may be an element that you wish to explore and try in your class. Having a peer provide feedback data will allow you to explore that element further.

Asbestos Awareness

We are required to provide all staff with the Asbestos Awareness Factsheet, below. It details what asbestos is and how we manage it at the school level.

The school is asbestos compliant. We maintain a current asbestos register, available to all tradesmen who conduct work on our site, and relevant staff are trained in appropriate management procedures as required.

Lift shaft installation

The exterior construction of the quadrangle lift is now complete; all that remains is some minor landscaping in the quad.

The interior lift shaft will now be installed, taking approx 4 weeks to complete.

A small works compound will be set up in the Home Ec car park on Friday 16 September, a sea container will be delivered and temporary fencing will be erected in the four parking bays facing the corridor outside rooms 24 and 25. It will impact parking week 10 term 3 and week 1 term 4, with most of the work occurring during the school holidays.

The disabled bay will be temporarily relocated to the first bay facing room 19.

After 100 years of life without a lift, we are almost there!

Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism Spectrum Disorder
ASD is a lifelong neurological condition that affects how students learn and behave at school. ASD looks different for all individuals, they may have poorly developed social skills, have difficulty with expressive and receptive communication and have the presence of restrictive and repetitive patterns of behaviour, interest and/or activities.

Adjustments
§ Visible timetable/Lesson Outline
- For students to refer to throughout the lesson
- Does not have to be fixed, you can make changes
§ Equipment
- Have equipment students can borrow
- This will assist with organisation
§ Task Analysis
- Break tasks down
- Give small chunks at a time
- Post-it notes work well
§ Breaks
- Let students take a break
- Set clear guidelines for what a break looks like
- Use a timer

Please email me or pop in and see me in my office if you would like any further information or assistance.
