Heard on the Hill Term 4, Week 4

Bonjour à tous.
Last week when I was writing the Heard on the Hill I was not expecting what the week brought us. I remind everyone that presently I have no confirmation that any Bunbury SHS student was involved in Manea Senior College’s scavenger hunt.
Further, I have received a letter from our Year 12 students. They are disappointed that you and other people may have the image that they have been involved in this inappropriate behaviour. I feel for them and the rest of our school community who have been tarnished by this incident.
On Tuesday I will be reviewing some footage with the Student Services team. If any BSHS student is identified in that footage they will not be attending the Presentation Ceremony in December. If we are unable to identify any of our students, I will be seeking advice about our next step.
Last week the P&C agreed to contribute to funding a senior school scholarship and the school has been working to clarify the DoE position on us offering scholarships. There is more work to do with the Board and Leadership team but we are really excited about announcing something in the next couple of weeks.
Also, I spoke last week with the Bunbury Port Authority about another collaboration. There is a great opportunity for learning areas to partner with the Port Authority to give your curriculum some relevance. My work in the business community is slowly starting to bring people to the table for you to partner with.
The Safe on Social presentation was very practical. For those that have jumped into having a look already great, but I would hope that your PC can devout some learning area meeting time to you exploring the resources further. We will also allocate sometime across the SDD to investigate.
Finally, this week we will hold our belated NAIDOC celebration. The theme 'Heal Country' is a difficult one to face. There is a lot of work to do together. Please enjoy the day, get involved and support our students where you can. A great place for you to start on your own understanding is looking at the SBS documentary Incarceration Nation.
Nuts and Bolts
WORLD TEACHERS DAY
I hope that you enjoyed World Teachers Day. It is nice to remind our students and community that we are human and require a little more than the delayed gratification that we receive from teaching. Thank you to Ellie and Kelly for producing the posters with some lovely pictures of some of you.
INDEPENDENT LEARNING COORDINATOR and GAT COORDINATOR
Expressions of interest are being sought for the role of ILC and GAT Coordinator. The position is a combination of the two roles. 0.4FTE is allocated to the roles. The ILC role also has the added resources of support from the library staff who currently handle a number of the day-to-day operational components of the role.
EOI for the Independent Learning Coordinator/GAT Coordinator role (0.4FTE) is due to Sharna Mason by COB Friday 5 November. Your EOI should be no longer than 2 pages indicating your ability to meet the needs of both job descriptions.
Instructional Leadership - Peer Observations
When looking for a goal it is easy to get caught up in what you don’t do well or what you are interested in learning. In designing your focus for your observation you should start first by tackling the student’s learning problems. What can you do better, differently to improve their learning?
Review student performance.
Reviewing not just the summative but the formative task will point to areas where students experience the greatest success and the greatest challenges. Use this information to shape your goal
Precise points
The more precisely you can identify the learning problem the more precisely you can shape the teaching. The problem might be
- Recall and understanding of key concept
- Recognising what the question is asking
- Performing under time constraints
- Producing complex answers
Consider the strategies that bridge the gap
Matching the strategy to the student learning needs is a compelling reason for developing our practice. Some examples might be
- Habits and routines – CMS and behaviour and relationships
- Fluency and recall – Weekly and monthly reviews
- Understanding – Explaining and modelling
- Quality of performance – Independent practice
Set up your observation
Now use the steps from last week and get your observations set up.

Learning Support Coordinator - Expression of Interest
The role of Learning Support Coordinator has grown significantly since it was first introduced in 2019, with the number of funded students increasing exponentially. The role is now being advertised as separate from the Literacy and Numeracy Specialist Teacher position. The LSC role has an FTE allocation of 0.4.
Please see the role description attached and send through your EOI to Kelly Anderson (Deputy Principal) by COB Friday 5 November. The quick deadline is due to needing to finalise staffing arrangements for 2022.
House Coordinator - Expression of Interest
We are seeking EOIs for the role of House Coordinator. At this stage, there is one definite vacancy, and potentially 1 or 2 more. Please see the attached role description and submit your EOI to Tina Nottle (Student Services Manager) by COB Friday 5 November.
Interactive Media Teacher - Expression of Interest
The IM course did not run for most of this year due to some staffing changes. We would like to see it running again. It can look different from the original course (see info below), however, applicants should outline their vision for the course if they wish to do something different.
The course does not have to run on Tuesdays and Thursdays, that is just what has occurred previously. Students usually have to apply for a spot in the class as it is usually quite popular. It is run off-grid as it provides a great opportunity for different year grouped students to work together.
Some materials/technologies may need to be purchased for this program to run again – we will work with the successful applicant to determine needs, do finance submissions etc.
Please read the role and IM course information below and submit your EOI to Sharna Mason by COB Friday 5 November. The quick deadline is due to needing to finalise staffing for 2022.

21 DAY ONLINE MENTAL HEALTH & WELLBEING WORKSHOP WITH AMY COOMBE
This is a program designed to help you and those around you feel happier, healthier, mentally stronger and more resilient & overall self-empowered. When life is so busy and demands so much from us, how the heck do we find the time to look after ourselves? How do we actually feel better, happier, more positive; within our minds, within our bodies, within our day to day life? And how do we help those around us at the same time?
Over 21 days Amy Coombe will share content, simple strategies, easy little tips, and tricks that you can use daily, to help improve your overall Mental Health and Wellbeing, Resilience and Body Image.
The content will be delivered to you via:
- Videos
- Private Facebook Group
- Facebook Lives
- Anonymous Q&A (where your questions are private but the answers are public)
It's all online so it can be done in your own time when it suits and when you feel like it. Watch and read a little every day, all in one week, or all in one day - whatever inspires you the most.
This program isn't therapy or counselling. It hasn't been designed to assist with mental illness. It's been created to help inspire you to make small, simple and effective changes within yourself and your life to help you feel happier and healthier and increase your resilience using practical and easy tips, tools and strategies. Please register your interest on the following link to secure your fully funded spot with Amy: ONLINE WELLBEING WORKSHOP. Once you have registered your interest, I will email a code for you to sign up directly in with Amy’s workshop. The workshop starts on Monday, 1 November.
Senior School Update
ALL Year 12s are finished!
A big thank you to all Year 12 teachers for your efforts throughout the year. We now focus on the Year 11 cohort in the lead up to their last days in Weeks 7 & 8.
Can I request that all students who are not demonstrating appropriate levels of work ethic and those that will not achieve at least a C grade are identified and parents are notified (Letters of Concern). I am currently reviewing overall performance and will be meeting with at risk students.
If a student is requested to attend a meeting in Student Services please allow them to leave class on the proviso that it is an appropriate time for “you”. I understand that at times a student is required in class. As an alternative, send them at the end of the lesson or ask them to come at the following lunch break.
It would also be an appropriate time to send Letters of Commendation to those students deserving of recognition!
Year 10 Update
A great deal of work has gone into setting up classes for 2022. I have sent a list of proposed ATAR students to PCs. After exams (Week 5), I will be re-counselling students who are identified as at risk of not succeeding within an ATAR pathway. I am requesting that PCs provide me with a list of students in Week 6 so I can complete that process. I would also encourage teachers to also provide ongoing feedback to those students with ATAR aspirations!
Have a great week
Tim Fry
Senior School Manager
This week we celebrated our NAIDOC with our Official Assembly.
The theme this year is “Heal Country”
First and most importantly, a big thanks to staff who have helped organise everything. A special mention to Tina Nottle for her unwavering support. I think us newbies are doing ok so far!
We were so privileged to have our local elders and so many great Aboriginal professionals from our Local Noongar Community talk to us. I really hope, as staff members, we can continue to make these important connections to enhance our work with all our students.
Please see further information below about the Noongar Language classes being offered at ECU with Karen Jetta that she mentioned during her guest speech.
