Heard on the Hill Term 1, Week 4
From the Principal
Kaya, Wanju
While Union bans continue to limit some of the things that we do I urge you to concentrate on important things – your classrooms. Like COVID, when processes became pared back to the essentials, we kept our focus on what was important – the progress and achievement for our students.
It is in times like this, the culture of an organisation truly shines through. We have a very strong culture and identity of who we are and how we do things.
- We believe student wellbeing and engagement are fundamental to unlocking the potential of every child.
- We know quality teaching is the cornerstone of a good education. We know ourselves, the students and the curriculum.
- We ensure that we have pathways that deliver real-world educational currency
I trust you all, and have complete faith in our beliefs, knowledge and actions will see our students through this time without any disadvantage, even when those actions are limited by union bans. I thank you all for the great start that we have had.
Keep establishing your routines and apply them with consistency. Your colleagues and PC are a great resource if you are unable to find a solution to a classroom management situation.
Have a great week

Nuts and Bolts
This year there will be 1024 students. The greatest growth areas have been in year 7 and a little in all other year levels. Although no school in the district can give students a better ATAR score than Bunbury SHS there is still a desire by students to try something new in Year 11 and move to another school. We are continuing to review and refine strategies to raise awareness of students of our competitive advantage in academic results and senior school culture.
High Quality Teaching Team
The High-Quality Teaching Team play an important role in the school to promote best practice, enhance student achievement in the classroom, and ensure our pedagogical approaches align with the Quality Teacher Framework.
If you are interested in joining this team, please chat with Cathy Watson.
Duty
We currently have a few problem areas with student behaviour at lunch times. Please see attached Yard Duty Responsibilities. If all teachers are consistent with their expectations and approach, the poor behaviour will quickly end.
A few problem areas include:
Library – No eating in the library, or the walkway to the library. Students should eat on the main school grounds before walking over to the library. Please ensure behaviour within the library is appropriate.
Cafeteria – Ensure students behaviour within the line, then also at the seating is appropriate for that area.
Front Lawn – This is a passive area. Students should remain seated on the front lawn or the top stairs of the Amphitheatre. Please also check the Kingia building for Lower School students.
Photo Catchup
Catch-up Photos will be held on Tuesday.
Staff who missed their opportunity to have their photo taken should head to the Green Room before school, or Lunch 1.
Students who missed their opportunity to have photos taken will be provided with a gold slip indicating when they should be sent down to the PAC by their class teacher. Teachers don’t need to take their classes down, just send the students with a gold slip to meet the teacher down at the Green Room.
Period 1 - Year 10-12
Period 2 - SHED & PBL photos
Period 3 - Year 7-9
Staff Attire
Just a quick reminder about the requirement to maintain business professional standard of work attire. While we value a comfortable work environment, staff need to maintain a professional appearance which contributes to important aspects of our school culture.
Staff can access our Professional Code of Conduct in the Staff Handbook, located in the School Policies folder on the shared drive.
Thanks!

Michael Oakford
I grew up in Tassie and completed my teaching degree there. After I graduated, I taught a few years of relief on and off when I wasn't travelling. Moved to Perth in 2016 for the warmer weather (now I consider going back for the cooler weather), where I spent 6.5 years at John Forest Secondary College. I then moved to Bunbury and spent the last 1.5 years at Dalyellup College.
Outside of work I love anything that gets me outside and keeps me active. As I am still relatively new to Bunbury I enjoy exploring new spots, especially the coastline, in the South West of WA. When time and money allow I love to travel (photo included is from the Phillipines last month). Since moving to Bunbury I have taken up my most recent sporting hobby, pickleball. I am a Geelong Cats supporter, with Tom Hawkins at the top of my list of favourite players.
I am excited to join the team at Bunbury SHS.
