Heard on the Hill Term 2, Week 10
From the Principal
Bonjour à tous, and Wanju
Before we get into the last part of our five-part series on Living on the Future Edge I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the amazing effort that you have put in during this term. After 2 years of uncertain working conditions and anxiety, we finally had the term that we were expecting. We did a great job to ensure the continuity of education for our students. More importantly, you pulled together marvellously to support each other through the COVID outbreak. It was a great team effort. I take every opportunity to shout that out loud.
Please ensure that you take a moment this week to prepare for the upcoming holiday. I wish you a wonderful rest and hope that this holiday brings all the joy and wonder that you deserve. Without further ado.
Living on the Future Edge - PART V
“By failing to prepare we prepare to fail”
Education is the foundation of a society. How will the exponential growth of technology that we have been talking about over the last four weeks affect education. If we accept what I have said previously, that we are trapped in an old paradigm we can see that the answer lies in changing the paradigm and creating new structures to take advantage of the trends we have discussed.
If education is a train, it is pulling many cars down the track – reading, writing, mathematics. Each year it seems that even more cars are being attached by the expectations of society. We have become the social worker, providing counselling and support victims of abuse. Despite the obstacles of time and money we are pulling the education train down the tracks faster and more effectively than ever before. Educators are doing a better job today than they have ever done – So what is the problem.
Despite our best efforts, the immediacy that technology has brought us has also made education increasingly disconnected from the rest of the world.
In the future education must adapt so that
- Learning is customised for the learner
- Learning is non-linear
- Learning is both virtual and physical
- Learning is assisted by thinking machines
- Learning is focussed on processing multimedia information
- Learning is collaborative
- Learning is whole mind
- Learning is based on discovery
- Teaching is about crafting problems.
Over the last five weeks, I have paraphrased and highlighted only sections of Living on the Future Edge. I thoroughly recommend reading the whole book it is an easy read and very pertinent for our own professional understanding of teaching and learning.

Nuts and Bolts
I will be away on LSL during the first week of Term 3. Kelly and the executive team will lead the School Development Day. There is a fantastic program organised for the day.
To access the Leadership Minutes from last week, see below.
Learning Support Update
It has been a challenge, and a learning experience, to step into the role of Learning Support Coordinator while still maintaining my role as Deputy. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with the EA team, and with Sue Gledhill, who co-manages this awesome group of staff.
Sarah Hales will commence in this role from Day 1 next term. She has been into the school already, attending EA team meetings and getting to know our processes. Sarah knows many of our students from her long time at Cooinda PS. Sarah will be located in the Learning Support office at the top of the stairs near Rm36 (the old HASS office). Concerns about any student’s learning should always go to the Head of Year in the first instance, who will look at the whole data for the student and make referrals to the Learning Support Coordinator as needed.
Jenny Byatt will continue to provide extra support to Sarah while she settles in, especially with regard to the development of Individual Education Plans. Jenny has been invaluable this semester and without her, none of these plans would have been completed.
Listed below are the students that the Learning Support Team provides assistance to (both funded and unfunded). We use our resourcing as best we can to support as many students as we can, but, as you can see, there is a need!
Please use your EAs effectively by communicating with them how they can best support these students and others in your classroom. Remember, the EA can always keep an eye on the rest of the class while you work with a small group – a flipping of the usual model of support.

SDD Concurrent Sessions
SDD is happening Monday 18 July. After lunch staff are required to attend sessions based on Teaching and Learning. There are four activities on offer, each one lasting 25 minutes. Staff are required to choose two activities to participate in.
Bring your device for each session. Confirmation of the rooms will occur on the day. Please see a brief outline of the four activities below.
Explicit Vocabulary Instruction for all Subject Areas
Before students start a new unit of work, they need to understand the vocabulary that will enable them to decode the complex questions and texts that you will give them. In this Professional Learning session you will learn how to effectively and explicitly teach subject specific vocabulary to ensure student success at all levels and support lower literacy students. This strategy is suitable for students in Years 7- lower level 10s as well as classes where there is a high number of students needing literacy support.
Executive Functioning Skills
Planning, organisation, time-management, task persistence and emotional regulation are among 12 key Executive Functioning Skills. These skills are not linked to intelligence and a deficit in these brain processes often contributes to underperformance at school.
This session is designed to equip teachers, of students struggling with EFS deficits, with strategies for EFS growth, to improve student and class productivity and academic achievement.
Cooperative Learning Using a BYOD
This will be the first in a series of sessions that explores the underlying concepts and practical classroom application of cooperative learning strategies. This session will involve teachers participating in a cooperative learning activity using a device. Please bring a smart phone or ipad – you do not need to be a digital ninja to have a go!
Vivi
With the rollout of the new Vivi devices having recently gone underway, this "crash-course" of the Vivi software will get any new or weary users up to speed. This session will also explore some of the advanced features of the Vivi device to maximise student engagement with lessons.

This is an internal link; therefore, it is only accessible when on the school network/Wi-Fi.
The sessions are noted on the left side of the registration page; click on the session you wish to attend.

Video for promotions
We love to see what projects are happening throughout the school! Across all the learning areas, we would like to capture a snapshot of what projects, activities and more happens during school for a new promo video that can be shared on our socials and website.
Ellie is available for classroom visits and can even attend incursions and excursions to get great footage of our students in action.
If you have something that you think could be videoed during class time or an incursion/excursion, please email Ellie: ellie.mackay@education.wa.edu.au with more details.
