Deputy Principal (Andrew Healey)

SDD Concurrent Sessions

SDD is happening Monday 18 July. After lunch staff are required to attend sessions based on Teaching and Learning. There are four activities on offer, each one lasting 25 minutes. Staff are required to choose two activities to participate in.

Bring your device for each session. Confirmation of the rooms will occur on the day. Please see a brief outline of the four activities below.

Explicit Vocabulary Instruction for all Subject Areas

Before students start a new unit of work, they need to understand the vocabulary that will enable them to decode the complex questions and texts that you will give them. In this Professional Learning session you will learn how to effectively and explicitly teach subject specific vocabulary to ensure student success at all levels and support lower literacy students. This strategy is suitable for students in Years 7- lower level 10s as well as classes where there is a high number of students needing literacy support.

Executive Functioning Skills

Planning, organisation, time-management, task persistence and emotional regulation are among 12 key Executive Functioning Skills. These skills are not linked to intelligence and a deficit in these brain processes often contributes to underperformance at school.

This session is designed to equip teachers, of students struggling with EFS deficits, with strategies for EFS growth, to improve student and class productivity and academic achievement.

Cooperative Learning Using a BYOD

This will be the first in a series of sessions that explores the underlying concepts and practical classroom application of cooperative learning strategies. This session will involve teachers participating in a cooperative learning activity using a device. Please bring a smart phone or ipad – you do not need to be a digital ninja to have a go!

Vivi

With the rollout of the new Vivi devices having recently gone underway, this "crash-course" of the Vivi software will get any new or weary users up to speed. This session will also explore some of the advanced features of the Vivi device to maximise student engagement with lessons.
