From The Principal - Andrew Healey

Healey, Andrew.jpg

It is already week 4 of the term and so much seems to be happening around us. Being an Olympic aficionado (the enthusiastic part of the definition only) has meant the weekend is catching up for all the events missed throughout the week. Femke Bol to me is an outstanding athlete. And speaking of athletes on the world stage, we had two students represent Australia recently. Jorja Horsfall and Jess Babich donned the green and gold to represent Australia in the World Underwater Hockey Championships. That in itself to represent one’s country is mind blowing.

Recently I have shared with the PCs quite a lot of data showing how we are progressing in relation to senior school. The data includes an ATAR analysis of the semester 1 examination results. In addition, the predicted ATAR was released last week (given to the PCs) and has been pushed out to the students as well. For the Year 12s doing a full ATAR program I have met with all, other than Jorja and Jess, to keep their goals in place. With only a few assessments left they will not make monumental changes to their predicted ATAR. As teachers, we have just as much responsibility to reduce stress coming into the examination period for our students as we must challenge them to do well. The never-ending fine line of push vs crash. Past results show that our teachers do both areas of responsibility very well.

Last little bit is about AI use in the classroom. There is a great article from UWA that looks at the use of ChatGPT and its impact on the validity of an assessment. It is interesting reading and challenges the concept of cheating to some degree. Here is the link if interested.

Have a wonderful week.

Cheers

Data Literacy (Andrew Healey - Deputy Principal)

Earlier I shared a little bit of information on Data Literacy, specifically about NAPLAN Reading. This time I have shared NAPLAN Writing.

The data for 2024 indicated a similar proportion of students were in the Needs Support section than the previous year. Reading and Writing covers nearly every subject at some point so the impact of a teacher to improve a student’s skills in these areas is crucial.

HOTH_050824_Andrew_Healey.png

All teachers are required to support the whole school strategy of Cornell Notes in all Year 7 classes (at least) throughout each learning area. Other graphic organisers are expected to be used as well (adaptation) when appropriate. The premise is for teachers to explicitly model appropriate note taking. The use of AI can assist teachers to differentiate or modify texts for weaker students, still allowing them the opportunity to learn how to take notes > improve reading > improve comprehension >improve writing.

Reading has a strong link to engagement within a class. Improving the skills of students to read allows them to feel part of the learning rather than disenfranchised from it.

Preliminary NAPLAN reports can be accessed by everyone in the folder below (Shared_Admin for Apple):

S:\AdminShared\Teaching Staff\Literacy and Numeracy\NAPLAN Data\2024\SSSR

You can find which students are in your class and go from there.

Positive Learning Environment (Kelly Anderson - Deputy Principal)

BSHS NAIDOC Week 12 – 16 August
NAIDOC WEEK 12-16 AUG 2025

The Cultural Inclusivity Committee needs your support to make this year's NAIDOC the best ever! This year's NAIDOC theme is Keep the fire burning! Blak, Loud and Proud.

We will be making a large pretend fire out of flames made by students and staff.  This lesson activity will be shared by Cherie Fielder via email to all staff.

We hope that you will promote and encourage your students to participate as much as possible.  Tell them to look out for the posters showing the activities that are happening around the school.

On Tuesday 13 August during period 4, we will have a whole school NAIDOC assembly with special guests.  Please remind students to be respectful and behave appropriately during this important assembly.

In the lead up to and including during NAIDOC week, it would be great if you could incorporate some Aboriginal content into your curriculum. The SBS website has a range of resources.

To show your support this week, please wear Aboriginal themed clothing.

Teacher Wellbeing Webinar

The Staff Wellbeing Committee has sourced a great deal on a Teacher Wellbeing Webinar with several expert presenters.  We can’t relieve staff for the webinar, but you can access the recording in your own time.  We have paid for 20 staff to be able to access the recording.  If you want to be one of those people, please email Kelly on kelly.anderson@education.wa.edu.au – it is first in, first served.  Thanks to Nicki Sharpe for the discounted deal and for bringing it to my attention.

WHO - Join well known inspiring and relatable teacher wellbeing specialists:

Meg Durham, host of ‘The School of Wellbeing’ podcast, author and presenter

Leonie Abbott, school wellbeing leader and trauma-informed education expert

Amy Green, educator, school leader and author supporting teacher wellbeing

Dr Helen Street, Positive Schools founder, author and education consultant,

WHAT - The webinar will offer relevant, evidence-based solutions and ideas to help you live your working life well. Over two and a half hours we will each address a different cornerstone of everyday wellbeing, helping teachers to meet their psychological, behavioural, physical and social needs.

Performance Management

This is just a reminder to action your performance management processes for this year.  Complete a reflection process and book in with your line manager to discuss your goals.  These can extend into 2025.  Templates are in the School Templates folder or ask your line manager.

Deputy Principal (Adam McGill)

Survey My Class

Thanks to all who participated in the Survey My Class process. Individual teacher reports should have been sent to teachers last Friday. Please note that you were required to have more than 4 student responses to gain enough data to collate an individual teacher report.

As with all feedback, you have the final decision on whether to take it onboard or disregard it.

I am sure within the report there are some things to celebrate and give yourself a pat on the back, along with some areas to investigate further. Please don’t jump directly into trying to fix any areas of concern. Firstly, utilise the High-Quality Teaching Team, your PC, or a colleague to observe and give their own feedback. After this, any areas of concern can be strategically worked through with your Performance Management or through the support of the Bunbury SHS Coffee Club.

I understand the process has been different to previous years with the timing, however the Leadership Team did direct the process for this year, after missing the opportunity earlier in the year due to union directives. If you have any feedback around the process, please pass on to your PC.

Parent – Teacher Afternoon

A reminder Thursday Week 5 from 3:30-5:30 is our Semester 2 Parent Meetings. Rachel has sent out your log ins, parents have until Monday of Week 5 to make their bookings.

An afternoon tea will be provided in the staff room from 3pm.

More information will be sent out via email.

Relief Lessons

To ensure the best opportunity for quality lesson delivery, and the safety of our students it is important to leave detailed relief notes for our colleagues. Unfortunately, some of the relief notes I have been referred to recently are not of the standard we expect at Bunbury SHS.

Please support your colleagues by outlining the lesson activities, along with relevant student information that is critical for a teacher to know as they are walking into the class. See proforma attached.

All relief notes for the day should be entered into Compass before 8:30am, not at the last minute before the class.

As always, if you are having difficulty with this, please speak with your PC.

Attached is the Quick Guide for Relief Lesson entry, and the BSHS Relief Lesson Proforma.
