Bonjour à tous, and Wanju

Last week we held our one board meeting for Term 3. During the meeting we discussed the “Media and Marketing Plan”.  Which – by the way the board were very impressed with – well done Kylie and Ellie.

I mentioned at the meeting that the production of the media and marketing plan had a very important outcome.  It made us reflect on who we are and what our point of difference is. I think that we all know that we are

  • A school with a long proud history that has produced Alumni who have had significant impact on our state and country. This continues.
  • An academic school with Rhode and Fogarty scholarship winners among our recent graduates. We are the first non-metro GATE school and the highest performing ATAR school in the Bunbury region, before median ATAR stopped being calculated.
  • A school with a long sporting tradition with many state, national and international representation. This also continues, and
  • The “City School”. Like Notre Dame in Fremantle, our school boundaries expand out into the Bunbury CBD and the Back Beach. The infrastructure of the city is used regularly by our staff.

This is not the sum of what happens at Bunbury SHS, our VASP program has won national acclaim and our music ensembles are among the best in Western Australia.  Our developing profile in the world of robotics is also starting to shine the spotlight on us.  There are many things that represent the breadth and depth of what we do.

Congratulations.  You are part of something special and your efforts are what makes Bunbury Senior High School continue to be the outstanding institution it is.  It is not always easy I know.  We have the problems that all schools have.  It is the way that we respond to those problems that shows who we are.  Some staff, and in particular student services staff, have responded to serious incidents in an outstanding manner that makes our response systems and processes a final point of difference.

Our philosophy of ensuring students Wellbeing is the foundation for Academic success is our final point of difference and the reason why we have such enrolment pressure from outside our local in-take area.

Keep up the good work everyone.  Have a great week

Nuts and Bolts

Thanks to Nghia and Rene who are kicking off the Work Health and Safety Committee. We held our first meeting last week to establish the expansion of the committee and set out the tasks that need to be completed. This committee has an important job to do in the school in keeping us all safe.  Safety in school is everybody’s responsibility.

Deputy Principal (Kelly Anderson)

Positive Learning Environment - Attendance

In my role as Deputy Principal, supporting Student Services, I am following up students with severe absence from school. The process starts with identifying those students by looking at the attendance data. Then I consult with the Heads of Year about which students' parents are working with the school to try and resolve the issues - I don't get involved with those cases.

The HOYs then indicate which students' parents/families are not engaging with the school, not responding to our contact, and not making any attempt to resolve the issue of poor attendance for those students. With the support of Toni Hotchin, I book meetings with each of those families, and work through a Responsible Parenting Agreement - a formal document that is signed by all parties. This process is designed to set some clear actions for improvement, and place some accountability back to parents/families about their child's attendance at school.

If there is engagement at the meeting, an Attendance Plan is developed and things improve for the student's attendance. It is never simple. These students often have complex mental health issues, or undiagnosed or diagnosed conditions that impact their attendance at school. The approach is always about how we can support from a school perspective, or how we can link the family to other agencies who can provide support.

Sometimes there is a continuation of lack of engagement with school. They might not show up for meetings. We try more than once to engage the family and then we consider the next step - an Attendance Advisory Panel. We will be referring some families to this process over the next couple of months. There is a bit of work involved in setting the panel up, as the idea is to have some impartial representatives on the panel, which usually means people from outside of the school. The reality is that this process has to happen before we can refer any cases to central office - no prosecutions will be sought if this hasn't happened at school level.

When students are re-engaging with school, please assist the Student Services team with this by being as welcoming as possible and working to re-establish or initiate positive relationships with students. A kind word and a smile can go a long way to making kids feel at ease. It is very hard to re-engage if you have been out of school for a long time. Assisting them with re-establishing peer relationships would also be very helpful. If you have a student who is missing a lot of school, do check in with Student Services about them and find out what you can do to support this student when they are at school. We can all play a part in improving attendance.

Business Plan - mid-year check in on our progress

For those that missed the staff meeting, or just want to be able to absorb the vast quantity of information in a less rushed fashion, I have attached the PowerPoint and the NSOS data for you to access at your leisure.

I have also attached the Business Plan and the Our Focus 2023, which is where the statements we were measuring our progress against came from.

We have made a great start to our current business plan, and that is because we have reduced the number of priorities, helping us to stay focused on what's important to our school. If you have suggestions to assist the implementation of the business plan, talk to your line manager about what you can do within your team, and then what could be done at a whole school level. Your line manager can bring these ideas to the Executive and Leadership teams for consideration. A plan is just a document, but it takes all of us to make it happen. Thanks for the work you have done and continue to do in support of the plan, as this also translates into support for students.

Workload Advisory Committee

Workload Advisory Committee

Workload is often the main cause of staff stress or anxiety. Our school has a workload advisory committee, which was set up as part of our focus on Staff Wellbeing in our previous business plan, and which we continue to support through the new Staff Wellbeing Committee.

Staff Representatives for this year (continuing their 2 year tenure) are: Renee Chapple, Luke Marinoni and Adam McGill.

If you have workload issues, please discuss them first with your line manager, as many of these can be resolved quickly and easily.

If you have an issue that cannot be resolved, please submit it via either the survey link provided here, or on the document below (which can also be found in the School Templates folder on your desktop.
