From the Principal

Welcome

119.jpg
What a terrific year it has been.  Although WA had its first real taste of COVID sweep through the community, many things have re-appeared on our school calendar.  The highlight of course was the return of Country Week after a two-year break.  However, the year was not all smooth sailing. The residual effects of dealing with COVID has seen a spike in student wellbeing needs and we are yet to reach our pre-COVID attendance rates. However, the one constant through this is, the tireless efforts of staff to provide continuity of education and keep things as “normal” as possible for our kids.

This year we hosted our final event to recognise the achievements of our 2022 graduating class on  Thursday 27 October. Although I was unable to be there, I watched the event via our live stream from my location. A highlight of the evening was the musical performances. This group of Year 12s is particularly talented and has been the backbone of our music program. A full list of award winners for 2022 academic year is included in this newsletter.

This term we have also welcomed our 2023 Year 7s to the school. The transition process started early in the term with our StepUp program. This program supports students that require a little more transition to ease their entry into high school. The StepUp program had the selected students make several short visits to the school to complete orientation activities. Prior to the whole cohort transition day, our team visited every feeder primary school to meet the students on their “home turf”. The transition day was a great success with the students experiencing everything that a high school has to offer on a daily basis.

Our House assembly this week acknowledged the new house leaders for 2023. There was a real show of House spirit with the presentation of the House trophy for 2022.  Congratulations to all those students who will be presented with their badges at the start of 2023.

There is immense interest from the entire region for our GAT, VASP and BEST programs. Students are drawn from across the region. Our newly appointed GAT Program Coordinator has revitalised the program with many new features including international learning activities and projects of student interest. This top-class program will continue to draw students from far and wide. Students currently in Year 5 can apply for the GAT program for 2025.

In 2022 we started a new Social and Emotional Learning program in Years 7 and 8. The students completed wellbeing activities for an hour a week throughout the year.  This culminated in a Wellbeing Camp for Year 8s held last week. The students walked part of the Cape-to-Cape track and were challenged along the way.

This year our focus on developing “educational currency” for our senior students has picked up pace. We now subsidise students who choose to complete a Certificate course through the BRTTC, up to $1000. Collaboration has begun with SRTAFE and Bunbury Regional business community to develop “skill sets” that students can add to a portfolio. Recently, I signed a Memorandum of Understanding with ECU that will create opportunities for linkage for education, cooperation for engagement in; research, micro-credentials, spanned delivery, educational pathways and more. This is an interesting development in Senior Schooling and one that we will ensure that we remain at the forefront of as it develops.

As I reflect on the year that was, we have continued to move forward. New buildings have added to the range and quality of infrastructure available to our students, the school has shown its quality by the achievements that it has achieved in state and national competitions, we are champion country week school once again and Bunbury Senior High School was named in the top 10 schools in the state. Our P&C engagement continues to grow as they develop school community events and we held our first Alumni open day last October. Our school staff and board have recently endorsed the new business plan that will see us through to 2025.

In closing, I would like to thank the wonderful staff, students and families that make our school community a great place to work and to belong. Some staff and families will be leaving us this year. Thank you to you all for your contributions to our school community and support of our students during your time with us. In particular, I would like to thank Mrs Sue Gledhill our school MCS, who, over the years, has overseen much of the new school building and has made a large contribution to the financial efficacy of our school. Good luck, to all, for your future endeavours. To everyone, have a safe and happy festive season and a relaxing holiday break.

Students access buses at one of four locations.

  • Most buses arrive and depart from the school bus stop which is located at the Western-most part of the school grounds, just down the hill from the oval (students can use stairs behind the PE shed).
  • Buses to some local areas leave from the city bus stop in central Bunbury, opposite Bunbury Centrepoint.
  • There are two other smaller bus stops which may be on some bus routes. These are; at the base of Boulters heights, opposite the Post Office; in-front of the RSL Hall on Spencer Street.

Triple P – Positive Parenting Program®

Rudeness and Disrespect

By Professor Matt Sanders

The teenage years are when kids want to create their own identity, so they often come into conflict with their parents.

But sometimes, parents think teenagers are being rude or disrespectful, when they are really just trying out their ideas and opinions about things they have seen on TV, heard from friends or read on the internet.

Remember, it is usually not the idea itself that is important to the teenager. It is more the chance to talk about the idea and to be respected as an adult for doing this. If it comes out a bit clumsy or aggressive, parents should try not to overreact.

Parents who directly challenge their teenager’s ideas with comments like “you wouldn’t do that” or make fun of them – “that’s a stupid idea”, may provoke them into trying something just to prove their parent wrong.

So, you need to take an interest and talk positively with your teenager. Discuss issues or events. Ask for their opinion. Encourage them to look at the different sides of an issue. Don’t view your teenager’s beliefs and ideas as a direct challenge to your authority.

Sometimes an idea may be presented as fact, with a clear challenge to you such as: “It’s wrong to kill animals for food.” The best way to respond is with an interested question, such as “Wrong in what way?” or “Do you think that’s true for everyone or just for our society?”

Teenagers usually respect parents who are prepared to openly discuss and explore their beliefs with them. Although they may rebel against their parent’s values, as they grow older they tend to adopt similar values and beliefs themselves.

Being inflexible and rigid about your ideas and beliefs invites teenagers to attack your views. However, if you have faith in your own beliefs and are prepared to explore them without being defensive or aggressive, teenagers will usually look for barriers elsewhere.

Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program®. For more information, go to www.triplep-parenting.net
