Bonjour à tous, and Wanju

Picture1.pngAlthough Week 1 was a short week it certainly feels like we are in the swing of things. I was lucky enough during my holiday break to use a two-day, 45km, walk along the Bilumun Track to recharge my batteries. It is important through the winter months and the hectic Term 2 that you don’t wait for the holiday but find a good balance of work life throughout the term

Thank you for your engagement in the School Development Day. You are not alone in wishing that we had more time like this to; talk with our colleagues; analyse data and prepare.

As we prepare to launch in Term 2, I ask you to consider Marzano’s 4 critical questions that determine student engagement.

  1. How do I feel?

Considering how a student feels is the first step. Does the student feel welcomed, supported, and accepted? The teacher’s relationship with the student goes a long way to determining how a student feels in any class

  1. Am I interested?

Game like activities trigger situational interest and provide a foundation for maintained situational interest. Basically, the human mind will naturally attend to situations that have missing details.

  1. Is this important?

Choices of task, reporting format, or learning goal allow students to take control of their learning and make decisions that ensure personal interest in their assignments.

  1. Can I do this?

If students do not believe they can perform the tasks, the brain will eventually reject it

This week also is the start of the information flow to our Year 10s about course selection and senior school. The senior school team and PCs are actively involved in the structured activities around this process. You can help by giving some key messages to our Year 10s

  • If they have a Band 9 or above for any NAPLAN test they should be doing a full ATAR course.
  • Bunbury Senior High School has topped the region in results for a number of years now.
  • We have high-quality teaching staff who have been acknowledged by SCSA.
  • Teachers at this school know them well.
  • Our campus is co-located with the CBD and the Back Beach.
  • New Senior School privileges are giving students more flexibility with time spent on campus.
  • The timetable is being driven by student selection and will provide more opportunities to mix and match course types, eg ATAR, Endorsed, General and Certificate.

Have a great week.

Nuts and Bolts

It is important at the start of a term to reset your expectations: Phones off and away, uniform dress passes – please ask to see them, bring your device to school each day, ear pods out and away – unless being used in class activity.

As well as these operational matters this term we will also be focusing on the implementation of our Good Standing procedures.

Thank you very much to everyone who participated in the School Culture Survey. The results will be discussed at the General Staff Meeting next Wednesday 9 May.
