Visible Learning Extract

Below is a graph from John Hattie on Visible Learning.

The key question is how this difference comes about. It is not that expert teachers constantly assign loads of work aimed at deep understanding. Logically, that is unattainable for any teacher as the workload itself is non-sustainable. Surface learning is critical before moving to deep learning. Hattie’s observation is more along the lines that experienced teachers spend too much time on surface learning and so miss the moment to move into deep learning.

To move across to deeper learning start with:

  • Ensuring the goals you are setting are clear to you
  • Make sure tasks are differentiated as much as possible
  • Make it clear what learning success involves and how it should be made visible
