Heard on the Hill Term 1, Week 2
From the Principal
Bonjour à tous, and Wanju
From the Administration can I thank you all for what appeared to be a very smooth start to the year. This week is the final week for census. The final number of students, “bums on seats”, determines our funding for the year. The student services and administration teams are working very hard to make sure all the students that are enrolled with us have turned up and are counted. Can you please encourage the students, to encourage any friends who have yet to return to school, to come along.
Last week I spoke to you about getting started. I have asked Andrew Healey and Kelly Anderson to provide that leadership for you. The Learning Environment (Kelly) and High Quality Teaching (Andrew) are the two areas that when set-up and developed throughout the year will yield great success for our students. I urge you to look at the topics that they will bring to you each week on things listed below and reflect on your practices. If we can apply these tried and tested practices consistently it will go a long way to helping our students succeed.
- Behaviour and Relationships
- CMS strategies
- Implementing the positive behaviour matrix
- Establishing High expectations
- Peer Observations
- BSHS instructional framework
Nuts and Bolts
COVID gatherings
The latest COVID update will affect the way that we gather. For the time being can you please limit the size of group that you gather in. It would be prudent for a while to have your lunch breaks in your learning area offices or outside. Please keep an eye on your booster requirement. It is important that once you have had your booster that your information is uploaded to HRMIS as soon as possible. Central office rings me to check when HRMIS alerts them to staff on site without the correct proof uploaded.
Morning Tea
I am really keen for as many of you as possible to attend the morning tea on Friday Lunch 1. To make that possible we will hold the morning tea outdoors to enable people to attend and socially distance outdoors. Morning tea will be held in the Art gazebo area. The Regional Education Director will address the staff. Tonya will give the learning areas supplying the morning tea some more instructions later this week. Please try to come along if you are not on duty.
Remote Learning Plan
Last week the Remote Learning Plan was reviewed by the PCs. It is important that we are all over this plan to ensure continuity of curriculum delivery should the school need to operate remotely. The updated plan will be sent out later this week. Please talk with you learning area leaders regarding the necessary resources you may need to make the plan viable.
School Clubs
Please see the below document for school club information.
House Coordinators needed
We have two leadership positions to fill in our school. The House Coordinator role is about leading teams of students to organise and run activities throughout the year in order to promote house culture. The role involves a two-year commitment. Both fixed term and permanent staff can apply. Please complete the Expression of Interest form below and submit this to the Head of Year 7 & 9, Nic Andrew on Nicholas.andrew@education.wa.edu.au by Friday 11 February.
Thank you to Kim Nimmo and Kyle Smith who were outstanding House Coordinators and retire their roles.
Connect
At the beginning of Term 1, all Year 11 and 12 SIS classes should be up and running on Connect. Course and assessments outlines with a link to the SCSA syllabus are the minimum elements required on each class Connect page. Assessment outlines should be completed in RTP as well and coded correctly. Flexible classes can be generated as required. HoLAs/PCs have shared a framework regarding assessment outlines on RTP for assistance.
Assessment Policy
The Senior School Assessment Policy is located in Storage_Admin or M: drive. Teachers delivering a senior school course, especially for the first time, to avail themselves of the nuances and expectations of the policy. Teachers need to constantly remind students of their responsibility concerning assessments as well.
Knowledge of Best Practice
Instructional Skills: The most specific behaviour instilled in students involves framing questions. A critical feature of ‘good’ questions in a classroom is those that are framed in such a way that each student is held accountable.
General question: “Can anyone tell me what Mr Beetroot tweeted about Scummo Scomo?”
Framed question: “Think to yourself for two minutes and I’ll ask you to share. What significance will this tweet have on the current relationship between the Liberal Party and the National Party?”
The framed question allows the student to rehearse an appropriate response within the safety of their mind before sharing it with others.
Best wishes to you all for a great school year!
Last year we commenced a program of rearranging our fiction shelves to make the library experience more interesting for our teachers and students.
We have 12 mobile shelving units at the north end of the building in the ‘lounge area’ dedicated to our fiction books. Four other free-standing mobile units are as follows – graphic novels; non-fiction/classics; interesting reads/short stories; and, picture books/easy readers.
The easy readers section is a particularly useful resource for teachers and EAs seeking titles suitable for students with low-level reading skills.
We welcome suggestions from teachers regarding new titles as we upgrade our catalogue.
From mid last year, we have been weeding books based on frequency of loan, condition and age – popular books that are damaged will be replaced and classic literature titles are now being shelved together.
Weeded books are being offered free to students and teachers – we have a display unit at the library entrance for these books. You are welcome to take books that may interest you or your family.
Please contact us if you would like to display student work, or details relevant to class activities/projects etc in the library.
