Welcome back, I hope that your holiday was filled with rest and relaxation. I really enjoyed watching your engagement in the School Development Day agenda and can’t thank the presenters enough for their time and energy in preparing such relevant and useful presentations.

On top of the successful SDDs, the school assembly, School Captains speech and Year meetings have confirmed my feelings of progress in conquering our challenges and mastering our expectations for 2022.  I cannot recommend highly enough that you keep a hold of the Our Focus 2022 document and keep the recommendations of our reviews foremost in your thoughts and actions. I know that they are in mine.

A lot of information was given during the two SDDs so there is little left to say but to wish you well for the beginning of the year and to remind you to look after your health and wellbeing.

Getting Started

Term 1 creates the foundation for the year and I would highly recommend that you go slowly, set your classroom routines, student expectations and focus on calm calculated classroom management strategies. Tina Nottle produced an excellent handout on the Behaviour management flow at Bunbury SHS. Please make sure that you have a copy.  Providing consistency across the school supports your colleagues.

Another useful document to keep in front of you is the Positive Behaviour matrix. This document gives you a framework to have conversations with students from a positive perspective.

Booster Program

Can I remind you of the third dose booster requirement. For many of you, who are eligible, you will need to have had your third dose by the end of the week (5 February). Those not yet eligible have a month from when they are eligible to get the booster.

For the eligible staff, please do what you can this week to get your booster shot and upload the proof to HRMIS. If you can do this by Thursday morning would be good to give us a chance for any contingency planning.  Please check HRMIS for your eligibility.

Vaccination appointments may be hard to come by, but it is very easy to get a walk-in vaccination at the clinic behind Bunnings. In the first instance please try to get your vaccination after school but I am happy to authorise school time for you to get your booster shot if needed. It will require coordination of teacher relief and it may not always be available when you need it. If you need time through the day to do this, please see Vicki to make arrangements. The advice from the DoE is that I have no discretion in allowing you to remain on the school site if eligible staff have not had the booster and uploaded the evidence. Thank you for your prompt attention to this requirement.

Deputy Principal (Kelly Anderson)

House Coordinators needed

We have two leadership positions to fill in our school. The House Coordinator role is about leading teams of students to organise and run activities throughout the year in order to promote house culture. The role involves a two-year commitment. Both fixed term and permanent staff can apply. Please complete the Expression of Interest form below and submit this to the Head of Year 7 & 9, Nic Andrew on Nicholas.andrew@education.wa.edu.au by Friday 11 February.

Thank you to Kim Nimmo and Kyle Smith who were outstanding House Coordinators and retire their roles.

Country Week Coaches Nomination

Country Week at Bunbury Senior High is a significant whole school event that students and staff look forward to each year. Through our successes in individual sports and numerous champion school results, BSHS has established a positive culture and hunger for achieving excellence. Ongoing success is something our school community is extremely proud of and works hard to achieve.

Country Week 2022 will be held Week 10 Term 2 (27 June – 1 July)

Duties as coach of a team:

  • Hold numerous trials to select squad of players
  • Lead training sessions and compete in warm up games in preparation for Country Week
  • Attend all Country Week meetings
  • Coach team throughout the week and support other coaches/teams where possible
  • Actively supervise and support all students throughout the week away

Please complete the following form to express your interest by the end of the week

Noongar News from our AIEO

Kaya Wandjoo

Welcome back everyone. I’m so excited to be part of the team again this year (unfortunately you can’t get rid of me that easily!)

I would like to thank all staff for participating so positively in our Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework presentation at our Development Day. Listening and learning from you all has given me some great ideas for our students. I hope that you all now have some key resources and skills to assist you in the learning environments for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students and implementing Aboriginal content into the curriculum. Please feel free to send me an email if you need to discuss further.

I’m very excited to have Asharie here this year, our Follow the Dream Coordinator, increasing our students’ skills and confidence to take on academic challenges and be successful in their chosen paths. I encourage you to make contact with Asharie and be part of the academic success for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students.

I will be starting my planning early for our NAIDOC events this year and I loved the comment at our PD, to make NAIDOC celebrations a week-long event. If anyone would like to be part of the planning, I would really appreciate it! Or just send me an email for ideas!

I look forward to working with you all in 2022!

Boorda
