Heard on the Hill Term 4, Week 2

Bonjour à tous.
You will have no doubt noticed the new bus embayment. There is still some work to go with line marking and landscaping. However, the quest to have the best environment for students continues. Later this week Perkins will begin preparing to start the refurb/building program.
Our quest to keep improving not only the physical environment but the learning environment goes on. Our Public School Review (PSR) report held many commendations but it also held some recommendations. Over the coming weeks, the leadership team will be unpacking those both as a team and then with the whole staff. This fits nicely in our self-assessment cycle. Term 4 is the time to review and plan for the future.
Staffing
Education has not been immune to the staffing shortages affecting WA and Australia. There are all kinds of staffing processes going on as we prepare nice and early for staffing the 2022 timetable. This includes the new initiatives, like the Career Practitioner and the Follow The Dream Coordinator as well as our response to the recommendations in the PSR report and filling the positions of staff movements. There are a number of EOI’s we would like to announce for 2022. A JDF of each position will become available as we run each EOI.
- Learning Support Coordinator (0.4 FTE)
- Prefect Coordinator (SRA)
- Teacher of Senior School Endorsed course – Research Project (0.2FTE)
Overview - Research Project - South Australian Certificate of Education (sace.sa.edu.au)
- GAT/Independent Learning Coordinator (0.4FTE)
- HOY Year 8 and 10
- Prefect Coordinator
If you would like more information about the positions now please see one of the Deputy Principals.
Nuts and Bolts
Just a reminder that if you are planning LSL or Short leave, this leave needs to be approved by the Principal before it is submitted.
Last week’s Edemail regarding the Squid Game is a good reminder for us to check our conversations with students and make sure that we maintain an educative presentation towards the students during all our conversations with them.
Squid Game - Ikon - The Department of Education
Farewell and good luck to Brooke Cleggett who has taken up a permanent position at Collie SHS. I know that the Principal is very excited to pick up Brooke. She will be a great asset to the school.
Instructional Leadership
I know that being observed is an act of faith – trust is paramount. Therefore, building a shared understanding of the smart goal is critical for success.
Select a skill
Using our BEST Teacher poster select a skill or practice to advance your teaching. It may be something that is already working for you that you want to be even better, or it might be a skill that you haven’t tried or don’t like.
Talk it through
Explain the skill that you want to develop to your peer observer. Let them know why you have chosen it and what you hope to accomplish by it.
Frame the Observation
Make sure that you have created a real clear plan to get better at the strategy. Your SMART goals will have a real clear framework that lets you know that you are making progress and being successful.
Review the observation
With the observation complete, use your Peer’s observation and your SMART goal as a point of reference. You may even use a video to enhance this point of reference to maintain a purely objective perspective.
Plan the next move
After the review use your peer and the observation information to design adaptations to keep working on improving the technique. This will help create the SMART goals for the next observation. Repeat and repeat.
Staff Meeting
Reminder that there is a staff meeting on Wednesday 27 October from 3.15pm - 4.15pm in the Library. An agenda will be sent out closer to the date. Apologies must go through the Principal.
Staff Acknowledgements
Head of Year 8 & 10
I would like to acknowledge Aaron Wilkinson, who won this role initially and thank him for the work he did prior to taking some leave. I would also like to acknowledge Nghia Nguyen, who stepped in and has filled in for Aaron while he was away. Thanks, Nghia!
Aaron has decided to vacate the position, and we are now asking for expressions of interest for the role, which will be for 2022 and 2023. Please see the below information to complete your EOI. These need to be into Kelly by COB Friday 30 October.
Prefect Coordinator
I would like to acknowledge the work that Luke Marinoni has done in the role for the past three years. Thanks, Luke! He has chosen not to continue with this role, so an EOI is also being called for this role, also due into Kelly by COB Friday 30 October. Please see the below role description and address your EOI to this.
New Student Services Manager
I would like to acknowledge the work of Tim Fry in his many years as the Student Services Manager and Mark Woodland for filling in for this role in Term 3. Thanks, Tim and Mark!

Club News
Kingia Z Club
I would like to acknowledge the work done by Brooke Cleggett in establishing our very first Z Club in conjunction with the Zonta Club of Bunbury. Thanks, Brooke!! We have a keen committee of students who have already been involved in some fundraising activities. With Brooke leaving BSHS, this leaves a gap for someone to coordinate the Z Club. Please let Kelly know via email if you are keen to step into this role.
The winners of the Iluka Visions 2021 Awards were announced on Friday 24 September with a special awards show.
A huge shoutout to all the entrants and to those who joined us at the gallery to celebrate the students’ works of art.
The overall winner of the prestigious high school visual arts exhibition was Bunbury Senior High School student Saoirse Torr (pictured above) with her piece entitled Social Distancing.
The Framers Choice Award went to Bunbury Senior High School student Allie Bourke (pictured below) for Forest Made of Mist also picking up the Year 9 Award High Commended.
Kambarang
Wildflower season (season of birth) October - November
This season sees an abundance of colour. The Banksias, Kangaroo Paws and Orchids show their amazing colours along with the Balgas that start to flower. The most prominent show of colour are the Moojas, Australian Christmas Tree.
As you may have seen already, snakes are out and about! They have come out of their hibernation looking for food to increase their energy levels. The Koolbardies, magpies, are also nesting and protecting their young…. so there’s still some swooping but should finish around end of October.
There’s longer warmer days and less rain!! Bring on the sunshine!
