Heard on the Hill Term 3, Week 6
Bonjour à tous.
What a week. School Development Day, Ministers visit and School review validation visit.
Well done to all staff for completing the PL at yesterday’s SDD. Unfortunately, the presentation of the resource was not to the level that we expected. We are providing this feedback to Curtin University. Thankfully the product speaks for itself. One thing that I got out of yesterday was how much you all were able to identify that we have a need for this program and how much of an effect the social and emotional development of a student can have on attendance, achievement, behaviour and our own mental health.
Last week I attended a meeting with, Liz and Tim at the Bunbury Regional Trade Training Centre. The speaker was Melissa Teede CEO of the South West Development Commission. Her message was really clear; the South West has become the focus of both the state and federal governments. There is a focus on automation and advanced manufacturing with a need for skilled labour. Schools were quick to see schools that think outside of the box with varied pathways and partnerships with small and medium-sized businesses are setting their students up for success. We are on this journey – but many of the other schools are jumping on the bandwagon now.

QUESTIONING AND FEEDBACK
Show Me Boards
A good way to sample the responses from the whole class is to use mini whiteboards. They are cheap and easy to use. I know that we have a couple of teachers in the school that use these regularly and I recommend you go watch someone like Brooke Clegget in action with these boards.
Distribute boards and Pens
You may choose to give every student one or force them to work as a pair or group. Don’t forget something to wipe them with.
Set the question with a time frame
Ask the student to produce a particular type of response with clear goals eg. sketch a diagram, write a maths solution or chemical equation, describe the main feature of a poem, etc. Give the students a clear time frame
Build in think time
Don’t let students show you their answers until you say so. Make sure everyone has had time to think. This raises the level of accountability in your classroom.
Show Me
Signal 3, 2, 1 and show me. Make this routine disciplined and sharp. Ask them to keep their board up until you have absorbed their response. Failure to do this will signal that you are not interested in their response.
Follow up
Look for misconceptions, interesting, correct and incorrect responses. Combine with Probing Questions and Check for Understanding
NUTS AND BOLTS
This year, the Year 12 Presentation night will be held at the BREC on Monday 6 December from 6.30pm. We did this to remove the part that the weather plays in the success of the evening.
We are seeking nominations for the position of MC. Ideally, you should
- Have a connection to the Year 12 group
- Had public speaking experience
- Be in a school leadership role (Deputy, PC, House Coordinator, Prefect Coordinator, HOY, etc)
If you would like to nominate for MC, please click HERE.
Still on the Presentation Night, before we finalise our choice of guest speaker, if you have any recommendations please forward any names and details to Ellie. Previous guest speakers have been past students with a story.

Zones of Regulations
The Zones of Regulation creates a systematic approach to teach regulation by categorizing all the different ways we feel and states of alertness we experience into four concrete coloured zones.

Each week, Kristy will share with us a Noongar word of the week!
Word of the Week: Koolangka
You’ll often here our Noongar parents and guardians talk about looking after their “koolangka” and this is why!
Koolang - child
Koolangka – children
- ka (the suffix) turns koolang in to a plural.
Let’s continue to empower and support all our KOOLANGKA!!
