Bonjour à tous, and Wanju

“There is no fire warmer than a winter’s sun”

I heard this somewhere as a youth but have been unable to find who is attributed to this quote.  It is true both literally and figuratively.  I was in Brisbane on the weekend for a conference. The sun was shining on a cold winter’s day (cold for Brisbane) both warming my body and brightening my spirit.  I hope you found some shining sun to warm your body across the weekend and something to keep your spirit shining through the final two weeks of this term.

Thank you for your feedback at the staff meeting on Wednesday.  We are collating data and will work with the leadership team, ready to present the results to you at the earliest time possible.  I mentioned Vic Z’Bar at the meeting on Wednesday. If you would like to read more of his work, there are books in the Teacher resource centre.

Our efficacy is dependent upon, yes you’ve heard it before, “a whole school approach”.  That is, us all being consistent in our day-to-day approach of being part of the culture at Bunbury Senior High School. It is no accident that we are excellent.  We all apply a CMS approach to low level classroom behaviour management. The school ensures that every teacher in the school is trained in these strategies, CMS and ISE.  If you are not yet, please see Adam, for when you are scheduled to cycle through the training.

Consistency in implementation is the key to sustaining our winning culture.  Consistency in

  • Applying CMS and ISE strategies
  • Using the instructional framework
  • Use of Teaching for Impact strategies
  • Applying the behaviour management policy and procedures
  • Using Lemov’s 5 Strategies to ensure High Expectations
  • Regular Peer observations to reflect on skill development

Do a self-audit.  Are you doing all of these? These are the things that are required to be a successful teacher at Bunbury Senior High School. If you need help your PC can provide any training, information or additional resources to help you be your best.

“Teachers and most particularly, what they do in the classroom accounts for 30% of the level of variance between students”

Have a great week.

Deputy Principal (Andrew Healey)

Data Literacy

Earlier I shared a little bit of information on Data Literacy, specifically about NAPLAN Reading.

The data for 2024 indicated a greater proportion of students were in the Needs Support section than previous years. The question is whether, as a teacher, you focus on the curriculum or focus on the skills to understand the curriculum.

All teachers are encouraged to support the whole school to use Cornell Notes in all Yr7 classes (at least) throughout each learning area. Other graphic organisers are expected to be used as well (adaption) when appropriate. The premise is for teachers to explicitly model appropriate note taking. The use of AI can assist teachers to differentiate or modify texts for weaker students, still allowing them the opportunity to learn how to take notes > improve reading > improve comprehension.

Reading has a strong link to engagement within a class. Improving the skills of students to read allows them to feel part of the learning rather than disenfranchised from it.

Preliminary NAPLAN reports can be accessed by everyone in the folder below (Shared_Admin for Apple):

S:\AdminShared\Teaching Staff\Literacy and Numeracy\NAPLAN Data\2024\SSSR

You can find which students are in your class and go from there.

Deputy Principal (Adam McGill)

Survey My Class

As outlined last week, the class survey opportunity is open. This year we have staggered the process to prevent students from having to do lots of surveys in a short amount of time.

However, we have identified a few problems with potential class changes occurring at the start of Term 3 for Year 7 and 10 students. If this is going to affect you, and you really want to get a survey done with a particular class this term, please go ahead and do it.

Chat with your HOLA if you are unsure if student changes will occur for you classes.

Ultimately, we are always looking to enhance the overall quality of teaching and learning in our school, and it would be great to have all teachers participating in this process.

If you have any questions about the process, please contact Adam on 78905.

    Staff Attire

Just a quick reminder about the requirement to maintain business professional standard of work attire. While we value a comfortable work environment, staff need to maintain a professional appearance which contributes to important aspects of our school culture.

Staff can access our Professional Code of Conduct in the Staff Handbook, located in the School Policies folder on the shared drive.

    High Quality Teaching Team

The High-Quality Teaching Team play an important role in the school to promote best practice, enhance student achievement in the classroom, and ensure our pedagogical approaches align with the Quality Teacher Framework.

If you are interested in joining this team, please chat with Cathy Watson.

I will be heading off on maternity leave at the end of the term but please continue to email and submit posts for our Facebook and Instagram pages!

We love seeing students in action, whether in a classroom setting, in an incursion or off-site for an excursion or camp.

If you are conducting any activities you think are suitable for our school's Facebook or Instagram pages, please submit your content through the link below.

Please contact me with prior warning if you would like me to attend a session, lesson, activity etc if you would like me to take photos/videos to accompany your story.

If you have taken photos on your phone/iPad and are unsure of how to transfer these to me, please send me an email or come and visit me and I can assist you.
