From the Principal

Welcome back to Term 4 everyone. Looking forward, the flowers have already started blooming, the weather will be warming up, and school life will keep us busy.  It is a bit of a metaphor. The new build is open and the classrooms are being used, the courtyard has been reassembled with only some cosmetic changes to come and the new stairs to the bus bay are open. It is like the darkness of winter is being brushed aside. I hope that you enjoy the new facilities.

Term 4 is traditionally a time for feedback and reflection. That of course will continue with all aspects of the programs that we are delivering at Bunbury SHS. As I mentioned in previous editions, the future is upon us and we need to work across a number of fronts, technology, enterprise skill development and positive, flexible delivery environment to ensure that schooling stays relevant and useful to our students. On the curriculum front, we will be supplying time over the next 6 months for staff to interrogate the WA curriculum resources.

I am really looking forward to our staff-directed Teaching and Learning committee and Literacy and Numeracy committee roaring into action this term. Along with the Building and Grounds committee, these provide a great opportunity for staff input.  Together with the work being done on creating a sense of belonging through the development of a positive learning environment and senior school culture our agenda is really clearly defined.

I hope that you have a great term and have a chance to look back at our accomplishments so far as a break from our continuous forward focus.

Nuts and Bolts

Alumni Open Day

On Saturday 22October, from 9.00–11.00am we are planning an Open Day for the Bunbury SHS Alumni. Unfortunately, personal circumstances have caused the Alumni Council president to resign. This has left the organisation of this event a little in our hands.

The plan will be to keep it very simple. Morning tea sold through the cafeteria, school site tour, sale of Alumni merchandise and membership drive. If you are able to give up an hour or two to help I would be extremely grateful. Please email me if you can help.

Head of Year Appointment

Congratulations to Nic Andrews who has been successful in being appointed Head Of Year.  It is a two-year appointment.

Shared Instructional Framework

The beginning of a new term gives teachers the opportunity to reflect on what they wish to see in the classroom. The Shared Instructional Framework provides the basis to construct lessons and programs that allows teachers to have routines, expectations and strategies to engage students. For example, saying to a teacher, “Just work at making the classroom safer” is of little use to teachers. A teacher does not ‘do’ safety. But you could say, “Increase safety by giving the learners time to think after you’ve asked a question, and let them share with a partner before selecting them to respond.” That helps teachers invoke safety by using a strategy from the Shared Instructional Framework.

 Year 12 Results

Year 12 data needs to be completed and entered into RTP this week. We have a short timeframe to send out final results to students within SCSA appeal timeframe. Teachers involved with SGM will need to confirm with their partners the final grade allocation.
