Edition 4 Term 4, Week 10
Message from our Principal

Welcome to the final newsletter for 2023. As another year comes to a close and I reflect on the year that was I am awestruck by the great achievements, individually by students, by staff and as a school. The busyness of the year makes the past restriction caused by COVID to be a distant memory. One of the most impactful things for the school this year has been the activation and engagement of the school community through the P&C and School Board in both the financial support and manpower, to support our school community events, infrastructure and governance.
On 27 October we hosted our final event to recognise the achievements of our class of 2023. A full list of award winners is included in this newsletter. It was a fantastic affair, once again held at the BREC. This year I noticed a growing tradition, one that our planning factors in, families head out into town after the ceremony for family dinner celebration of the milestone achieved by their children. It is wonderful to see, and I hope that it only continues to grow.

At the other end of the high school journey, we welcomed our largest group of Year 6 students to the school this month for their orientation day. The orientation day was a great success with many activities, QR code search, tug-o-war, and the start of building new friendships. There is immense interest from the entire region for our GAT, VASP and BEST programs. Students are drawn from across the region. We recently concluded the information sessions for our specialist programs and potential applicants of the future. These programs are always very competitive.
Our school vision clearly honours, respects, and stands on the shoulders of our historic culture and traditions. Our new focus on innovations, in creative timetabling to provide flexible pathways into senior school, the development of a Social and Emotional Learning program, external partnerships providing the context for real learning in; the environment, robotics, creative arts, and literature are clearly engaging for students, as our Year 10 group will also be bursting at the seams in 2024.
Our new prefect group, led by the School Captains Riley Fisher and Scarlett Brown, has a new structure that divides them into four Ministries. Each prefect now leads their own Ministries with the help of House Leaders. Already this term they have actively contributed to the Arts and House culture of the school by leading the House Assembly and Music Showcase.
Our specialist programs have had a great year, as interstate travel reappears on the Education Department's list of possibilities. The VASP students travelled to Tasmania to visit the MONA and the BEST students visited the home of sport in Victoria and completed some high-altitude training in the snow.
The development of the “whole child” is an important consideration for us at Bunbury Senior High School. Hence our SEL program, now in its second year, has undergone a review and continues to evolve. I just completed the Wellbeing camp with the Year 8 students that was a culmination of this program. The students used the camp to review and put in context their understanding from the program. In 2024, we will focus our efforts on some more opportunities for our Year 9s.
For some schools, the Senior School Review will be causing great anxiety. We have been adapting to educational trends for three years now and find we are already moving toward the future horizon. The addition of the ECU UniPrep course and flexible timetabling options that allows students to mix and match ATAR course, General courses and Endorsed programs is the most progressive in the region. Next year we will be adding ECU portfolio workshops that have the potential of receiving credit from ECU. We are focused on making education a student driven experience by offering things like our Musical Theatre Workshops and STEM club as off grid courses.

Of course, we are still working our way through our 10 Year Building plan. This year saw upgrades to the Amphitheatre and the completion of a retaining wall on the lower fire road. This retaining is the first part of a very big project to secure the sand dune that our picturesque school is built on. Watch this space carefully for news on the required funding to retain the upper fire road – a massive undertaking. Also, this year we have focussed on safety and installed CCTV across the school.
In closing, I would like to thank the wonderful staff, students and families that make our school community a great place to work and to belong. Some families will be leaving us this year. To the families and community members who are leaving us, thank you for your contributions to our school community and support of our students during your time with us. Good luck for your future endeavours.
This year we have several staff who are either moving to Perth or back to the Eastern States. I would like to publicly thank the staff leaving this year for their contribution to the education of our students and to the culture of our school.
To everyone, have a safe and happy festive season and relaxing holiday break and return to us safely.

P&C Association
This Semester has been a very busy one for the P&C Executive. We welcomed new members Genevieve Schoeman and Rod & Sarah Hawker in our June meeting and promptly formed a Musical Production Sub-committee. We then decided to engage in fundraising by undertaking a Bunnings Sausage Sizzle in September to fund Term 4 Music Theatre Workshops for students.
We went on to employ a local community music theatre specialist and advertised for student interest and received approximately 20 applications. We then commenced Music Theatre sessions on Thursdays from 3.30-5.30pm. We settled into the sessions with about 12 regular students. On Thursday of Week 8 we held a concert for parents and friends in the Performing Arts Centre Theatre that was very well received with students showing a range of Music, Dance and Drama skills that would be more than suitable for a music production. We thank our Music Theatre specialist Susie Ingham for her energy and enthusiasm in making the workshops a success.
Amongst these activities, we also provided catering for the First Lego League competition held at the school on November 19. We opened the Cafeteria to provide a barista service as well as set up a burger stand in the Quadrangle for lunch. There were 14 teams attending from schools throughout the Southwest coming from as far as Margaret River. The day was well attended by parents and everyone had a great time with plenty of food and beverages consumed.
We then finished the year by providing a sausage sizzle for the end of year Music Showcase on Thursday evening of Week 9 held in the school Amphitheatre. In the weeks leading up to this event, the P&C organised and paid for permanent lighting to be installed in the Amphitheatre to make the venue suitable for nighttime activities.
At our last meeting in November, we adopted a new Business plan for 2024 and approved the Uniform Shop & Cafeteria Staff & Volunteers to have an end of year thankyou luncheon at Nicola’s Ristorante.
I would like to thank Kathy, Athena, Sara, Brigitte, Genevieve, Rod & Sarah for their precious time on the P&C Executive and our Principal Mike for his enthusiastic support. I also thank the school administration staff and various other staff especially Deon for their support during the Semester.
We are always looking for more parents to join us in the new year and what we achieved this Semester was largely due to three motivated parents joining us with some great ideas.
I wish you all the best for the Christmas & New Year celebrations and summer holidays and look forward to seeing everyone in 2024.
Thanks,
Geoff Ogden

Raising Responsible Teens – Part 2
By Professor Matt Sanders
Raising Responsible Teens – Part 2
By Professor Matt Sanders
As mentioned last column, there are six key ingredients for teenagers becoming mature young adults who are valued and healthy family members. This week I give you the first two.
Taking Part in Family Decision Making
Teenagers need to learn how to make good decisions, and by involving them in family decision making they can learn the skills they need to make good decisions. Family decisions can range from what meal to cook to more serious issues such as deciding to move house.
For more important issues arranging a family meeting may be useful.
- Explain the issue that is to be discussed.
- Ask everyone for ideas, especially your teenager.
- Listen for any positive comments and acknowledge them. Your teenager may not say much at first so really look for anything you can be positive about.
- Avoid criticising suggestions that seem simple, complicated or silly, as this may discourage your teenager from offering ideas.
- Ignore any minor negative behaviour if you can and continue your discussion as if it had not happened.
Being Involved in Family Activities
Taking part in family activities provides opportunities for sharing and talking together. Teenagers can also learn some useful skills for when they leave home and have to manage on their own.
Set aside time to do things that your teenager enjoys and plan the activity together. Planning in advance will help to ensure that you have everything you need, and help to avoid the activity occurring at the same time as something your teenager enjoys such as a favourite TV show or social event with friends.
I will continue with more of the key ingredients for raising responsible teens in your next newsletter.
