Principal's Report

Something special is going on...
Bunbury Senior High School’s class of 2020 has proved themselves to be highly capable with the release of the West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) results.
The class demonstrated its strength across the board with 20% of our ATAR cohort scoring an ATAR of 90+ by SCSA. They were Monti Chambers, Alyssa Davies, Jamieson Loxton, Nathan Nguyen, Saoirse Torr, Ruth Strong, Hannah Thomas, Emma Tinley and Leon Anish Abraham. A further 20% were given a 90+ by one or more universities after they have added their bonus points.
Below is what some of the students will be doing this year:
Emma and Alyssa have moved to Perth and will be boarding together at St George’s College. They started University in February and Nathan, Jamieson and Monti are looking forward to making the move to Perth to fast-track their Masters of Engineering at UWA.

Year 12 2020 students who scored 90+ for their ATAR. Riley Martin right who was absent for group photo.
Twelve students received SCSA awards. Five were awarded a Certificate of Distinction. This is awarded to each eligible student who, in their last three years of secondary WACE enrolment, achieves 190-200 points. These students were Jamieson Loxton, Nathan Nguyen, Hannah Thomas, Emma Tinley and Saoirse Torr. Certificates of Merit were awarded to seven Bunbury Senior High School students: Tristen Bazeley, Monti Chambers, Alyssa Davies, India Lewis, Katherine Mulligan, Ruth Strong, Ebony Wallin.
Indicators of school performance such as WACE achievement rate (96%) and the attainment rate (100%) were well above the state and like school averages. This was on the back of the hard work by students and teachers to ensure that OLNA requirements Reading (99%), Writing (100%) and Numeracy (98%) were all met.
VET students also performed to a very high level, with 81% of Year 12 students completing a certificate. There were even a number of students (21%) who completed a Certificate III or IV. Three students completed 3+ qualifications. These students were Kailah Bury, Aaron Merling and Keilani West.
These results are a testament to our students’ hard work, the backing of our supportive families, dedicated teachers and a school environment that stimulates a cooperative atmosphere of learning. I congratulate the class of 2020 not just for these wonderful achievements but for the courage and resilience that they showed in achieving these results under trying conditions.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device)

Bunbury SHS has been a BYOD school for the past couple of years, and this has really allowed our teachers to explore a much broader range of teaching and learning strategies with their students.
Please remind your student to bring their device, fully charged, to school each day. If you are keen to purchase a device, please click the link below to access our recommended supplier, along with the recommended specifications. If you have a different era iPad, it is okay to use that instead. A cover with a keyboard built in is recommended for the type of activities the students do in class.
If you have any queries or concerns about our BYOD program, you can contact our Deputy Principal, Kelly Anderson.

CAFETERIA
It’s been a big start to the year with the opening of the new cafeteria. Whilst our Manager Deb McGinley has taken sick leave for the term our relief Manager Louise Bruce-McGinn has done a fantastic job along with assistants Sharon and Lyn in getting the new Cafeteria up and running with a new menu.
We also thank our tireless Cafeteria Volunteers who have stuck with us through the changes of moving from the old canteen to the temporary canteen on the school oval to the new Cafeteria.
UNIFORM SHOP
The uniform shop has also had a good start to the year with Manager Marianne. We are in the process of suppling through our wholesaler Action Sportswear the new Phys Ed Sports Shirts and Winter Jackets.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
Our AGM will be held on Wednesday 17 March from 6.00pm in the school Library where all Executive positions will be declared vacant.
The P&C’s primary function is to advise the school on the feedback from the parent body on the direction of the school. It also raises money to assist the school to provide the best infrastructure for students. Part of that role is to manage the two businesses that ensure our students receive nutritional food and smart, appropriate and value for money uniforms.
We are looking for people with business experience and those would like to get some experience to help manage our businesses. We would like someone on the P&C Executive to look after the uniform shop by providing support to Manager Marianne and reporting back to the Executive. If you are looking for something a bit more engaging we are looking for someone to oversee the Cafeteria. This would involve providing support to the manager and reporting back to the Executive.
As the current President, I am happy to provide any support needed for people interested in these positions. We are also looking for Executive members with enthusiasm who can specialise in sourcing funding and running events. All the executive positions of President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer and general Executive members will be voted on. To become a member of the P&C only requires self-nomination and payment of $1 at the meeting. We only hold eight meetings during the year so not a lot of time is taken attending meetings. We will post a link soon for people to fill in the membership form to join the P&C.

Year 10, 11 and 12 OLNA
To achieve the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE), students need to demonstrate minimum standards of literacy and numeracy. These standards cover the range of skills regarded as essential to meet the demands of everyday life and work.
There are two ways students can demonstrate the minimum standards:
- Prequalification through the Year 9 National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN), or
- Performance in the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA).
Students who achieve Band 8 or higher in any of the three components of reading, writing and numeracy in their Year 9 NAPLAN are acknowledged as having demonstrated proficiency and are not required to sit the corresponding OLNA component, e.g. if a student achieves Band 8 or higher in reading in their Year 9 NAPLAN they will not need to sit the reading component of the OLNA.
If your child is required to sit OLNA in Week 5 and 6, they will have received an individualised timetable with the components they are required to sit in Round 1.
Please click on the following link for further information on the OLNA Assessment.

Starting Year 7

Starting Year 7 poses many new challenges, but also offers exciting opportunities. It comes with a number of mixed feelings. Unfortunately for many Grade 6 students, 2020 was marred with school closures and remote learning due to the pandemic and the overall impact of this is still unknown.
For many students, regular orientation activities at the end of 2020 were less than ideal. Therefore, many students may be feeling a little bit more anxious than usual about their expectations of starting Year 7. Grasping new skills and establishing new study practices can quickly become daunting and overwhelming.
During this time of transition, parents and carers need to be supportive, but also realistic in their expectations. This is an important milestone in your child’s life. There will be feelings of exhilaration, but also the fear of the unknown. Therefore it will be important for parents and carers to be vigilant in monitoring their child’s mood and mental health during this time. They could easily become overly anxious or even depressed.
In this Special Report, there are a number of strategies offered that can make this transition period smoother and start things off on the right foot! We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this Special Report, and as always, we welcome your feedback.
If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.
Please see the link below to access the special report.
Student Achievement - Bryan Meijer

Congratulations to Bryan Meijer (Year 11) who recently received his recreational pilot licence making him currently the youngest pilot in Bunbury. Bryan received his pilot licence at the end of last year just after his 16th birthday through Bunbury Aero Club.
Bryan flew solo for the first time at 15 years old and since gaining his licence can now fly solo in the local area and take passengers on board.
Bryan has dreamt of becoming a pilot from a young age and has been working weekends since he was 13 to pay for all his flying lessons.
Year 7 Activity Day
On Friday 12 February, our Year 7 students came together for Year 7 Activity Day. The day aims to connect new students as they transition from primary to high school. Over the day our Year 7s participated in a range of team building and wellbeing activities including rock climbing, sack races, water races, tug of war, tunnel ball and many others. Students were also treated to a sausage sizzle for lunch! Welcome to Bunbury Senior High School Year 7s!

Ellie Mackay – Media and Marketing Officer
Originally from Perth, I studied Mass Communications at Curtin University majoring in Journalism and Public Relations. Securing a graduate position in the education system, I began my career at coeducational private school All Saint’s College in Perth as a Communications Officer. I then made the move to Bunbury in 2019 and continued my marketing career at Axis Hire, a local mining equipment supplier. Wanting to return to education marketing, I secured a position at Bunbury SHS.
I will be tasked with continuing to strengthen the school’s reputation in the community, taking on such responsibilities as producing the Kingia (Yearbook), school newsletter, managing the School's Facebook and social media platforms, event photography/video and other various promotional opportunities.

Nicki Sharpe - TIC of Languages
I have recently become a resident of the south west having spent 10 years in Kalgoorlie teaching French and Drama to Years 1-6 and classroom teaching Years 3-6. I was born in Berlin as my father was a linguist in the British Royal Air Force. I spent 12 years of my childhood in Germany, four years in boarding school and worked in sales and marketing for 10 years using my languages. I backpacked around the world in 1998/1999. Eventually, I graduated as a teacher in 2005. I have an 18 year old daughter and two dogs.
Learning languages has helped me build relationships with life-long friends from around the world as well as communicate with work colleagues in different countries. I look forward to sharing my passion for language at Bunbury Senior High School.
